Q. What does the Hollard Funeral Plan cover?

The Hollard Direct Solutions Funeral Plan pays out a lump sum on your death, the Family Funeral Benefit pays out a lump sum on the death of your partner/spouse and/or children covered by the policy.

Benefits include:

  • Cover that ranges from R5 000 to R50 000 in multiples of R5 000
  • 6% annual benefit increase
  • 10% annual premium escalation

Q. How much will the policy cost me?

The premium depends on the benefits taken, cover levels taken and the ages of the people being covered.

Q. Do I need to undergo any medical tests or answer any medical questions?

You and your family members do not need to go for any medical examinations or blood tests in order to be covered.

Q. Can I cover my whole family?

You can cover your family by adding the Family Funeral Benefit to your funeral plan. The Family Funeral Benefit covers your partner and up to five children for a small additional premium.

Q. How long does Funeral cover last?

  • Cover for you will cease on your death, as long as you pay your premiums
  • Cover for your partner/parents will end on your death or on their death, whichever is earlier, as long as you pay the premiums
  • Cover for your children will end on your death, their death or when they turn 21, whichever is earlier, as long as you pay the premiums. If your children are unmarried full-time students, mentally or physically impaired then their cover is extended until age 25

Q. How long does Personal Accident Cover last?

  • Cover for you will end on your death or cease at the age of 75, as long as you pay your funeral policy premiums
  • Cover for your partner (if covered by your funeral insurance) will end on their death or cease at the age of 75 whichever is earlier, as long as you pay the premiums
  • Cover for your children will end on your death, their death or when they turn 21, whichever is earlier, as long as you pay the premiums. If your children are unmarried full-time students then their cover is extended until age 25
  • The benefit for an insured person will also terminate if the Accumulated Disability Benefits claimed for that person reaches the Personal Accident sum assured for the insured person
  • This benefit also ceases for all lives insured on the earlier of the main insured’s (your) death and the Main Insured’s 75th birthday. It also ceases for the partner if he/she reaches age 75

Q. What happens if I miss a premium?

You have 30 days to pay the premium that you missed. Your funeral plan cover will continue for this time but, if you claim, the unpaid premium will be deducted from the claim amount paid out. After the 30 days the funeral policy will automatically lapse and all cover will cease.

Q. Are there any exclusions?

Hollard will not pay a benefit if the claim arises from, or is the result of:

  • Any criminal acts committed by you or an insured person
  • The insured person being outside the country for more than three months
  • You, or the person claiming, not be honest about any material information we ask for in connection with a claim on this policy or application for this policy

Q. Life Cover: Additional exclusions

Hollard will not be liable to pay a benefit if any claim arises directly or indirectly from or is traceable to:

  • The Insured Person engaging in:
    • A Terrorist Activity; or
    • Labour disturbances, riot, strike or lock-out; or
    • Hazardous or professional sports / activities more than once a month or on an income earning basis; or
      • The use of nuclear, biological, chemical or explosive weapons or any radioactive contamination
      • An Insured Person driving any type of vehicle when the Insured Person had a blood alcohol content that exceeded the legal limit allowed for driving by the laws of the country where the accident occurred
      • The use of drugs by an Insured Person, unless it is proved that the drug was taken in accordance with proper medical prescription and not for treatment of drug addiction
      • An Insured Person refusing medical treatment recommended by a medical practitioner
      • The unreasonable or wilful neglect or failure of an Insured Person to seek and remain under the care of a physician

Q. Personal Accident Benefit: Additional exclusions

Hollard will not be liable to pay a benefit if any claim arises directly or indirectly from:

  • Wilful exposure to danger (except in an attempt to save human life), intentional self-inflicted injury, suicide or attempt thereat;
  • An Insured Person engaging in:
    • active service, combat duties or military exercises in the military, naval, air or police services of any country or international authority; or
    • acts of terrorism; or
    • labour disturbances, riot, strike or lock-out; or
    • hazardous or professional sports / activities on an income earning basis;
  • The use of nuclear, biological, chemical or explosive weapons or any radioactive contamination;
  • An Insured Person being involved in an accident while the Insured Person:
    • was driving any kind of vehicle while the alcohol content of his/her blood exceeds the level permitted by the law of the country where the accident occurs
    • had taken a drug, unless it is proved that the drug was taken in accordance with proper medical prescription and not for treatment of drug addiction
  • Any insured person who is outside South Africa for more than 3 months;
  • Illegal acts of the insured person or his/her executors or administrators, legal heirs or personal representatives

Q. What is the waiting period for funeral benefits?

The waiting period starts on the date that an insured person becomes entitled to the cover. No benefit will be paid if death occurs during the applicable funeral policy waiting period. The waiting periods are:

  • 12 months for death as a result of natural causes
  • 12 months for death as a result of suicide
  • 24 months for death as a result of a pre-existing condition

Q. What is the waiting period for the Personal Accident Benefit?

Cover is immediate after paying the first premium.

Q. What is the waiting period for the Vehicle Access Benefit?

  • 6 month waiting period for death as a result of natural causes
  • 6 month waiting period for suicide
  • 24 month waiting period for death as a result of a pre-existing condition
  • Mocking Bull (Pty) Ltd will not provide the vehicle benefit if the claim arises from, or is the result of, an accident that occurred before the benefit inception date

Q. What is the waiting period for Life Cover?

  • 12 months for death as a result of natural causes
  • 24 months for death as a result of suicide
  • 24 months for death as a result of a pre-existing condition

Note: If your policy lapses and you subsequently reinstate it, the waiting periods will re-apply.

Q. What is a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is any medical condition, physical defect, illness, bodily injury or disability that you or an insured person had (whether or not you were aware of the condition) before you applied for cover.

Q. Can I cover my parents?

You can cover your parents and your parents-in-law on your funeral plan for a small additional monthly premium per parent, as long as they are under the age of 75 when their cover commences.

Q. Will I get anything back if I cancel my Funeral Plan?

If you cancel your Hollard Funeral Plan within the first 30 days of commencement (for any reason whatsoever) you’ll receive a full refund of premiums that have been paid, provided you have not claimed. If you cancel your funeral policy after the 30-day cooling-off period, you will not get anything back as this funeral insurance policy does not acquire any surrender or paid-up value.

Q. How do I qualify for the Money Back Benefit?

The Money Back Benefit applies to all Hollard Funeral Plan policyholders. You will receive a lump sum amount of up to 20% of premiums received, after every 5 years. The policy must be in place for a continuous period of 5 years at the time the payout is due and all 60 premiums must have been received.

The money back applies to all premiums excluding the policy fee and the premiums paid for the Vehicle Access Benefit.

Q. Can I decide who will receive the benefit?

We make all benefit payments to you. If you die, we will pay the benefit to the person you have chosen to receive the benefit (your nominated beneficiary for proceeds). If you have not nominated a beneficiary, the benefit will be paid to your estate.
